Beat Saber

Beat Saber is a VR rhythm game developed by Beat Games. The game takes place in a surrealistic neon environment and features the player slicing blocks representing musical beats with contrasting colored sabers.

The game includes several songs with up to five levels of difficulty, starting from Easy to Expert. The player uses VR motion controllers to wield a pair of sabers, one colored red and one colored blue. The game starts the player with a stream of blocks in each song, laid out in sync with the song’s beats and notes. The game also features playing some songs in specific orientations where blocks approach from around the player. Each block varies in color, corresponding to the saber’s color that should be used to slash it, red on the left and blue on the right. It is also marked with an arrow indicating one of eight different directions in which the block may be required to be slashed. There are also blocks with dots instead of arrows, which players may hit in any direction. When a saber properly slashes a block, it is destroyed, and a score is awarded based on the length and angles of the swing and the accuracy of the cut.

Contributor notes

What is surprising, refreshing, most interesting?

What is interesting about this experience is that it takes the concept of rhythm games and transforms it into a more immersive context. It also provides an alternative to outdoor exercising since it apparently burns around the same calories as tennis which is especially important during the pandemic when there are limitations in going outside.

Key Insights? What can we learn from this?

Beat Saber is not only an immersive experience but also a intimate one. You are in another world filled with sounds and flashing lights at the intimacy of your own home. From this, we learn that virtual and even augmented reality can be accessible to anyone and anywhere as any form of an experience. It not only allows an visual and hearing experience but also physical with the sabers and objectives to clear the colorful boxes.
