Castle Hill

Castle Hill is a collective experience that has become a dedicated space for anyone to add their graffiti, artwork, or mark on.

Castle Hill is a failed building development in Austin, TX that artists have been tagging and adding their art to since the 1980’s until the closure in 2019. The abandoned building development eventually reached the status of an outdoor gallery in 2011 and has created a permanent (until its closure) space for artists to contribute their voice and works to.

The origins and endurance was particularly surprising and refreshing.

Key Insights? What can we learn from this?

People are driven to large group collaboration and drawn to do something they're usually not allowed, like add graffiti to a surface, under a structured, collaborative, and permissive environment.
