Pride in Lights

RUN Creative Agency's unique creative solution for The Auckland Council to draw attention to the Ellen Melville Centre and help the community celebrate Auckland Pride Festival 2020.

RUN is a Māori owned advertising and design agency in Auckland. To celebrate pride, they collaborated with Augmented Human Lab at Auckland Bioengineering Institute and Faculty of Creative Arts & Industries to create an installation of colorful light panels at Auckland City’s Ellen Melville Centre that can be controlled by the public using a web app. On the app, called Play, people are able to choose from six graphics and pick from five colors to fill them in, which are then sent to the Centre’s windows. The result is a spectacular display of fun and witty animated graphics that engage the audience and capture the essence of the Pride Festival. The interactive aspect of the project allows the public to see their own contributions come to life, capturing the lively spirit and creativity of the audience. The animations and colors displayed change to produce a diverse array of compositions, reflecting the diversity of Auckland’s community while emphasizing the importance of positivity.

What is surprising, refreshing, most interesting?

I found it interesting that audience members were dancing near the display. It made me consider the way in which an animated installation can encourage movement.

Key Insights? What can we learn from this?

I enjoyed seeing how the audience reacted to the displays and found it significant that they had a way to contribute. I think that for Project 3, using an easily accessible platform such as an app to allow the public to interact with an installation would be a good idea. Also, I liked that the project spread both messages of positivity and awareness of important social issues.
