AKC Museum of the Dog
AKC Museum of the Dog is one of the world’s largest collections of fine art and artifacts related to dogs. It provides an physical and digital experience for users of all ages.
The Museum of the Dog in New York City is a nonprofit organization representing the American Kennel Club’s passion for our beloved canines and its identity as an educational and research institution. Inside the museum, it bridges the digital and physical experience. The permanent collection of the museum consists of bronze and ceramic sculptures and paintings. In addition to paintings and sculptures, the museum also exhibits dogs in film, dogs of presidents, war dogs, and dogs in exploration. The museum appeals to visitors of all ages, and the hands-on moments are paired with a social and friendly identity to accentuate the classical displays. Digital experiences have various interactive activities like “Find Your Match” and “Train a Dog on the Job.” A mobile app also provides information about the artwork and AKC-related services and features augmented reality experiences such as a virtual guide dog named “Arty.” The result is an experience that is personal, heartfelt, and memorable.
Contributor notes
What is surprising, refreshing, most interesting?
What is interesting about this experience is the concept itself. New York has museums with the most obscure yet interesting concepts in addition to the MET, MOMA, and Guggenheim like the Museum of Sex so it is interesting to see a museum about dogs. It not only combines the physical and digital experience for the visitors but also provides a kid-friendly space with those interactive aspects.
Key Insights? What can we learn from this?
The concept and purpose of the museum is a crucial aspect to experience design. Experience design does not have to be separated, whether digital or physical, as they can be combined. We see that exhibition design also plays a massive part in the experience, such as the museum's classical style and paintings with various digital experiences through apps and augmented reality-related activities.
